In the beginning...

In September 2017, Puerto Rico was ravaged by hurricane Maria, which left it crippled. As a result, many people left the island and left their animals behind, while others were displaced because of the storm. Regardless, many made their way to the Arecibo Observatory looking for safety and shelter. A group of scientists took it upon themselves to protect and help these abandoned cats. And thus, the Observatory Cats was born. After rescuing and taking care of two abandoned kittens, Venus and Mars, the Observatory Cats group expanded their efforts to help other cats in the area.

We have been fortunate to help Space Cats who were in dire need and gave them a chance at a better life. Thanks to the amazing support on our GoFundMe campaign. We have been able to help over 30 cats and find homes for over a dozen of them both on and off the island. As well as handle necessary medical emergencies.

Over two years later, the stray cat population is still exploding. The Humane Society has implemented five very successful Spayathon all over the island but there is still a lot of work to be done. A female cat can have 2 to 3 litters of 2 to 6 kittens a year which can multiple quite rapidly. Cat population control is one of our main goals.

We are in the process of becoming a 501c3 nonprofit and have worked with other nonprofit and animal rescue organization.
